Birmingham 20mph pilot scheme approved

The zones will be introduced in 15 areas

Plans to impose 20mph speed limits on a third of Birmingham's roads have been approved despite objections.

The pilot scheme will cover the entire city centre inside the ring road and all, or parts, of 15 other areas.

The first new limits are due to be installed by March 2015, subject to consultations, and implementing the pilot is set for completion in 2015-16.

Out of 3,565 people in Birmingham quizzed about the plans, 58% said they were against it.

Main A and B roads will keep their current speed limit under the plans, the council said.

The pilot project includes all or part of:

• Aston

• Nechells

• Ladywood

• Edgbaston

• Harborne

• Selly Oak

• Bournville

• Moseley

• Kings Heath

• Springfield

• Sparkbrook

• South Yardley

• Bordesley Green

• Washwood Heath

• Hodge Hill

The limits will apply to residential roads, streets with a high number of shop frontages and roads near schools, parks, health centres and leisure centres.

Approval was given at a city council cabinet meeting on Monday.
