The £128m Midland Metro extension is scheduled to be finished by 2015

A busy city centre thoroughfare has closed for three weeks to allow tracks to be laid for Birmingham's tram extension, the operator has said.

The closure at Colmore Circus means buses are unable to stop in the area and are being diverted, Centro said.

Temporary bus stops have been set up on Great Charles Street and Colmore Row.

Centro said its £128m extension to the Midland Metro, between Snow Hill and New Street stations, is still on schedule to be completed by 2015.

The scheme also includes a new fleet of trams and a new maintenance depot in Wednesbury.

Colmore Circus will be closed until 4 May.

A Centro representative said: "The tram extension is progressing well.

"Already a length of track is in place along Bull Street. The next phase is to bring the track across Colmore Circus."
