A project to redevelop Wolverhampton railway station is to get £13.5m of government funding.

David Cameron made the announcement during Prime Minister's Questions, in response to a query from local MP Paul Uppal.

The project, led by a consortium, received government backing last summer as part of an £18m investment in the city.

However, plans for the station have been delayed.

The Prime Minister said it was "absolutely essential Wolverhampton benefits from good road, rail and other infrastructure connections, so it can benefit from the growth we're seeing in our country".

The money, from the local transport and growth deal, follows a visit by Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin a little more than two weeks ago.
