Two hundred workers at an optical laboratory have been told they could be facing redundancy.

Birmingham based Aston Labs Ltd, owned by Specsavers, could be closed as the company considers how they "remain efficient".

The opticians said "workload would be absorbed by other manufacturing sites in the UK and Europe".

Aston Labs Ltd provides optical lenses to Specsavers outlets in the UK and Ireland.

Sean Lawe, Specsavers' Supply Chain Director, said the company is in "collective consultation with those affected to discuss whether redundancies can be avoided or mitigated".

He added: "If there are any job losses we will offer full redundancy packages and support including alternative employment within the wider Specsavers business."
