A murder investigation has been launched after a 16-year-old boy who was shot in Birmingham died.

The teenager was found with serious wounds at an address in Lighthorne Avenue, Ladywood, at about 12:30 GMT on Sunday.

He died in hospital on Tuesday, West Midlands Police said, and added they were doing all they could to support his family.

A 17-year-old boy arrested on Tuesday remained in police custody, they said.

The boy was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Forensic teams were investigating the scene near Birmingham's Mainline Canal on Wednesday.

Police said a crime scene remained in place in Lighthorne Avenue and another off St Vincent Street as part of their inquiries.

Walkers near the Utilita Arena were turned away and told to find alternative routes.

Ch Insp Sara Beech said the teenager, who has not been named, "should have had his life ahead of him".

"Our thoughts are with all his family and friends at what is an incredibly painful time," she said.

"We understand this dreadful news will naturally cause concern and upset within the community, but we need people to remain calm so we can fully investigate, get answers and convict whoever was responsible."

Officers said they had increased patrols in the area to offer reassurance to residents.
