The Perry Barr recycling centre has been modernised and had its capacity increased

A household waste centre in Birmingham is set to reopen on 31 January after being shut for more than two years.

The Perry Barr site shut in July 2021 for redevelopment work to increase its recycling capacity and improve facilities, the city council said.

But two contractors have since gone into administration and there have also been supply chain delays.

In July, it was announced the Veolia Household Recycling Centre at Kings Norton would also be shutting.

No date was given for the two-year closure to modernise the Lifford Lane site.

Birmingham has five household recycling centres, with sites in Tyseley, Castle Bromwich and Sutton Coldfield as well as Perry Barr and Kings Norton.

In a statement confirming the Perry Barr reopening, the council said: "Following the second contractor going into administration, a new programme has now been developed which will see the completion and opening of the household recycling centre on 31 January 2024.

"The recent change in the HRC reopening date is due to inclement weather affecting the processes of the build as well as difficulties experienced with the supply chain."
