The crash on the A38 (M) Aston Expressway involved four cars, Central Motorway Police Group said

Commuters travelling into Birmingham city centre have faced delays of up to an hour after a four-car crash closed part of a key route.

A lane of the Aston Expressway shut in both directions on Friday morning from junction six for Spaghetti Junction to B4132 Waterlinks Boulevard.

The closure was to allow emergency services teams to clear debris.

All vehicles had since been recovered and all lanes opened, motorway police said.

The crash happened at about 07:30 GMT.

Stating four vehicles had been involved, police at the time urged drivers to find alternative routes.

Those on the M6 northbound approach and the A5127 Gravelly Hill route were among those to also experience delays, West Midlands Roads reported.

Further up the motorway at junction eight, drivers experienced congestion due to a fuel spillage.

But following recovery work, Central Motorway Police Group said four Expressway lanes were open into the city and two out, with that likely to ease congestion.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service said one woman was treated for minor injuries by medics but did not wish to go to hospital and so was given self-care advice and discharged. There were no other patients, they added.
