Walsall Council defends response to icy road conditions

Walsall Council has defended itself after motorists complained of icy conditions on the roads.

Several callers to BBC WM complained about the conditions during Tuesday afternoon with one comparing roads in Willenhall to an ice rink.

The council said a "heavy localised snowstorm" struck during the afternoon.

A council spokesman said the snow appeared to freeze as soon as it hit the ground and it would investigate why this happened.

He said eight gritters had been immediately sent out and were out until midnight.

Councillor Tom Ansell, cabinet member for transport at the council, also said teams had been out on Monday night and again early Tuesday morning.

On Tuesday, he said the council worked in conjunction with Tarmac gritting the town centre and district centres.
