Bilston honour for ex-England goalkeeper Bert Williams

A plan to name a Black Country leisure centre after former England and Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Bert Williams has been formally approved.

The city council unanimously voted the Bilston site should honour Williams, who played over 400 times for Wolves.

Williams, 91, of Shifnal, Shropshire, who played in the 1950 World Cup, was made an MBE last year.

The new leisure centre will feature a 25m pool, sports hall, squash courts and a fitness suite.

The centre should be open by summer.

The goalkeeper played 28 matches for England during a career in which he won both the FA Cup and the League Championship.

His was made an MBE in November for his services to football and to charity.
