A legal order to clampdown on dog fouling and to ensure dogs are kept under control in certain areas is to be reviewed.

A Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) put in place by Bradford Council is set to expire in May.

A proposed new order includes the existing restrictions plus some new ones such as the owner having items on them to pick up faeces.

A public consultation has been launched asking for views on extending the PSPO.

The current order needs to be reviewed before it can be extended, Bradford Council said.

The proposals mean the following is required from anyone in charge of a dog in a public space within the district:

  • Dog faeces is immediately picked up

  • The person with the dog has a means to pick up faeces

  • Instructions to keep a dog on a lead are followed

  • Dogs are not brought into areas where they are excluded, unless they are assistance dogs.

Anyone who is found to have breached the rules could face court action and a fine of up to £1,000 or a fixed penalty notice of £100, which would be reduced to £80 if paid in seven days, the council said.

The online consultation aims to gather information about which issues concern residents and businesses the most and will help to review the PSPO and the areas it covers.
