Police investigating the murder of a woman whose remains were found on the M5 have arrested a 39-year-old man.

Melanie Hall, 25, from Wiltshire, was working as a clerical officer at the Royal United Hospital in Bath when she went missing 14 years ago.

Officers said the man, from Wiltshire, went voluntarily to a police station.

Police said the arrest was an important step but stressed the investigation was still ongoing. The man is due to be questioned by officers.

Miss Hall vanished after a night out at Cadillac's nightclub in Bath.

Previous arrest

Her remains were discovered on a slip road at Junction 14 of the M5 in South Gloucestershire in October 2009.

Det Ch Insp Gareth Bevan, of Avon and Somerset Police, said: "Since Melanie's body was found last October, the investigation team has continued to work tirelessly, following up new information we have received and revisiting the previous investigations that followed Melanie's disappearance from Walcot Street in June 1996.

"An additional 250 statements have been taken and 1,200 new tasks and investigative actions have been completed. Today's arrest was one such action."

On 1 July this year, a 38-year-old Bath man was arrested on suspicion of Miss Hall's murder and disappearance. He was later released on bail.
