Man in court in South Africa over honeymoon murder

A man has appeared in court over the murder of a woman on her honeymoon in South Africa.

Xolile Mngeni, 26, is charged with murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances following the death of newly-wed Anni Dewani, from Bristol.

The Reuters news agency reported Mr Mngeni said he could not pay for a lawyer and would apply for legal aid.

Mrs Dewani and her husband Shrien were in a taxi near Cape Town on Saturday when they were kidnapped by armed men.

The couple, from Westbury-on-Trym in Bristol, had been married for two weeks.

A police spokesman said a second suspect was arrested this morning in connection with the murder.

The taxi driver and Mr Dewani were released unharmed, but his wife was found dead in the taxi on Sunday morning, in the Khayelitsha township near the city.

A post-mortem examination showed that she had been shot.

Reuters reported that Mr Mngeni was assisted by a Xhosa translator during the hearing, at Wynberg Regional Court in Cape Town.

Mr Mngeni, from Khayelitsha, was remanded in custody until a hearing on 25 November.

Mrs Dewani's body has been released to her family.

A fundraising page set up in her memory on the Just Giving website has raised more than £3,500 for a school in India.
