Avon and Somerset Police council tax set to freeze

Avon and Somerset Police Authority's finance committee has recommended freezing the force's share of council tax.

Some 1,300 people have given their views on cuts to police funding in Bristol, the surrounding areas and Somerset.

The Spending Review outlined a 20% cut to police funding over four years.

The authority carried out a consultation following the announcement.

The authority's finance committee has recommended freezing its share of council tax in 2011/12 to take advantage of a government grant.

Authorities that freeze council tax are eligible for a grant equivalent to a 2.5% increase in their share of the levy.

The decision will be made by the full Police Authority on 9 February, when the police budget will be set.
