Clifton cinema flats scheme rejected

Councillors have rejected proposals to convert an old picture house in Bristol into flats.

Developers wanted to convert the Whiteladies Road cinema, in Clifton, into nine flats while preserving original features of the building.

The architect for the project said he thought they had come up with a "balanced approach" but the planning committee disagreed.

The cinema, which was open for 80 years, closed in 2001.

Owners Medinbrand have previously tried to convert the cinema into a gym which would have been run by LA Fitness.

Nine objections to the application were received by Bristol City Council, including concerns over changes to a Grade II-listed structure.

Among the objectors was English Heritage, which said a lack of clear direction of use of the auditorium "raised serious concerns as to its future survival".
