The Wave: Bristol artificial surfing lake plans submitted

A surf lagoon, similar to the one pictured, and swimming lake could be built on a 40-acre site near Bristol

Plans to build a "unique" in-land surfing lake have been submitted to South Gloucestershire Council.

As well as the freshwater lagoon, the team behind the proposal, called The Wave, plan to create a swimming lake and 40 acres of landscaped gardens.

A decision from planning officers is expected by the end of March.

Nick Hounsfield, co-founder of The Wave: Bristol, said it was "not a one dimensional project" but offered benefits locally and further afield.

The proposed development straddles land at Washingpool Farm, Almondsbury, and Over Court Farm in Easter Compton.

Technology developed in Spain would be used to generate surfing waves of up to 1.5m (5ft) high for surfers of varying skill levels.

"The plans have been developed following close consultation with the local community," said Mr Hounsfield.

"For example, there was a clear desire from local people for a swimming pool in the local area. As a result, we have amended the plans to include a separate natural swimming lake."
