Avonmouth 'fly-infestation' plant to reopen

A waste recycling plant near Bristol, which was shut following a series of fly infestations, is to reopen.

Last month the Environment Agency ruled recycling firm Boomeco was responsible after homeowners and businesses in Avonmouth complained about the flies.

Bristol City Council said it had served an enforcement notice requiring the company to adhere to "strict" working conditions or "face prosecution".

The council said environmental health officers would monitor the operation.

A Boomeco spokesman said "lessons had been learned" and that the "previous issues" that arose had been remedied.

He added the company had enlisted the services of an entomologist to ensure its exports were "fly-free".

The plight of residents and businesses caused by the flies was raised in the Commons by Bristol North West MP Charlotte Leslie.

At Prime Minister's Questions David Cameron acknowledged people in the area had "suffered unacceptably".
