ss Great Britain given £117k to restore Brunel's drawing office

The ss Great Britain has been docked in Bristol since 1970

The ss Great Britain Trust has been awarded more than £117,000 to restore the office where plans for the iron-hulled ship were drawn up.

The ocean liner was built by engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel and launched in 1843.

It was brought over from the Falkland Islands and returned to Bristol in 1970 where it has since been fully restored.

The money will allow the Grade II* listed office to be used as part of a new museum about Brunel's legacy.

The plan is for the drawing office to sit inside an authentically restored dockyard setting which is due to open to the public in 2016.
