Seatbelts seen as 'dangerous' just one week before they became law

It is 40 years since wearing a seatbelt in the front of a car was made compulsory.

In 1983, Points West reporter Jenni Murray asked drivers in Bristol what they thought about being made to wear one, with some suggesting that the seatbelt itself was a danger in the event of a crash.

The number of fatal injuries to people in the front of cars dropped by 29% in the year the new rule was introduced.
