The family of a 76-year-old man who died following a hit-and-run say their lives have been "turned upside down".

Phillip Cole, from Knowle West, was struck by a van on Ilminster Avenue in Bristol on 18 January, and died five weeks later.

A 32-year-old man was arrested three days after the incident and has since been released on bail.

"Seeing him every day fighting for his life in intensive care was heart-breaking," said Mr Cole's family.

Avon and Somerset Police described it as a "fail-to-stop collision", external have asked witnesses or those with dashcam footage to get in touch.

In a statement, Mr Cole's family said: "Our lives were turned upside down the day Phil was left injured on the road.

Police say the investigation into the incident is ongoing

"He fought for five weeks but the injuries he sustained were just too much to recover from.

"Words cannot describe the pain and suffering caused. It feels like we have been living in a nightmare for the past few months, still with no sign of it ending."

They added: "We would like to thank everyone who tried to save Phil's life, both at the scene and during his time in hospital."
