One person has died following a motorway crash involving a car and a lorry.

Avon and Somerset Police said the collision happened on the M4 between junction 18 for Bath and junction 19 for Bristol, at about 13:00 GMT.

"Despite the best efforts of emergency services, one person sadly died at the scene," police said.

Four people were taken to hospital with injuries not thought to be life-threatening or life-changing.

The motorway was closed in both directions to allow emergency services to respond and recover the vehicles involved.

The family of the deceased are being offered support by a specialist family liaison officer, police said.
