Peterborough's new war memorial is dedicated

Peterborough's new war memorial on Bridge Street has been dedicated during a ceremony attended by veterans.

The previous monument was tucked away behind the cathedral, and the city's veterans and council wanted a new memorial in a more prominent position.

The Ancaster white limestone obelisk was funded by public donations.

George Bennett, chair of the Royal British Legion Peterborough branch, said it was "a very proud moment" for the donors.

Councillor Irene Walsh, chair of the Peterborough War Memorial Committee, said: "We must not forget that without the generosity of members of the public, school children, local businesses and everyone else who made a donation to the appeal, we would not be where we are today."

The memorial was officially dedicated by the dean of Peterborough, the Very Rev Charles Taylor, who also blessed it following a short service.

Pupils from William Law Church of England Primary School performed Wherever You Are, the song written for the military wives who took part in BBC Two's programme The Choir.

The monument design is based on the Armed Forces Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.
