Two people who died near a river in Cambridge earlier are thought to have taken drugs shortly before their deaths, police have said.

A woman who collapsed near Jesus Green lock on Chesterton Road at about 12:05 BST was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.

A man taken ill nearby also died, Cambridgeshire Police confirmed. A second man has been taken to hospital.

Officers have appealed for information about recent drug supply in the city.

Police are yet to release details of the type of drug they believe could be involved.

A cordon has been set up on the banks of the River Cam and forensics officers are at the scene.

The three people are believed to be in their 30s or 40s police said, and were together at the time of the incident.

The deaths are currently being treated as unexplained.

Det Insp Billy Bremner, from Cambridgeshire Police, said: "We are in the early stages of investigating these tragic deaths and are keeping an open mind as to the cause.

"At this stage we can say that the three people involved are believed to have taken drugs in Cambridge shortly before becoming ill.

"We would urge anyone who has any information about the supply of drugs in the city to call police."
