More than 60 firefighters tackled the early morning blaze at the University Arms Hotel in Cambridge
The fire engulfed the top floor of the hotel which quickly spread to the roof
About 150 guests were escorted out of the hotel, but no-one was injured
Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service said it had begun an investigation into the cause of the blaze
About 150 guests had to be evacuated when fire broke out at a major city centre hotel in Cambridge.
There were no reports of injuries as firefighters tackled the blaze at the De Vere University Arms Hotel near Parker's Piece.
Regent Street, a major road in the city centre, and other neighbouring streets were closed and traffic diverted.
Two crews are expected to remain at the scene during the evening, the fire service said.
Eyewitness Rob Campbell, principal of Impington Village College in Cambridgeshire, said: "I could see the smoke from the top floor rooms.
"There were at least two that looked significantly damaged and one which was billowing smoke from the top.
"It looked like a fairly major incident with the number of tenders that were there, and all the police walking across Parker's Piece."
Crews from Suffolk and Hertfordshire helped Cambridgeshire firefighters tackle the blaze, which was confined to the top floor of the hotel although it had spread to the roof.
A full investigation into the cause of the blaze is now under way.
