A man has been arrested and another bailed after a "nasty" assault left a woman in hospital.

Cambridgeshire Police said the attack took place between 05:10 GMT and 05:40 on Saturday in Church Walk, off Broadway, in Peterborough city centre.

The woman was taken to Peterborough City Hospital where she was treated for serious injuries and later discharged.

A man, 33, from Peterborough has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and remains in custody.

A 51-year-old man from Peterborough was also arrested after the attack, and has been released on bail.

Police were called to the scene at 06:45 and cordoned off the area, including closing a short section of the road.

Det Sgt Sarah Morgan asked witnesses to get in contact, and said: "This was a nasty and sustained assault which left a young woman in hospital.

"We have CCTV which shows a group of people walking along Church Walk. We do not think any of them were involved but they could have information crucial to our investigation."
