Litter picking work begins in Cornwall

Work has started on a mass litter pick across Cornwall ahead of the tourist season.

Cornwall Council said it was spring cleaning 500 sites across the county, including public beaches, with the help of volunteers and local businesses.

However, the A30 and A39, the county's two main trunk roads, will be the focus of the first stage of the 2011 Clean Cornwall programme.

Council workers will tackle more than 100 miles (160km) of roadside verges.

The first stage of the programme will carry on until 10 April.
