Truro Cathedral bells ring again

Truro Cathedral's new bells have rung out over the city for the first time, breaking the silence that has reigned for most of this year.

The four new bells, which were cast in Leicestershire, bring the total to 14.

After a huge fundraising effort and delays from technical problems, it was a celebratory occasion for Truro's campanologists.

The new bells have been cast to celebrate the centenary of the completion of the cathedral.

Taylor's Bellfoundry in Loughborough cast the new bells, as well as the ten original ones 100 years ago.

Andrew Mills, from the company, said there were several reasons why the bells could not be rung at Easter, as planned: "We had technical hitches.

"Anything we tried to move and thought would fit, didn't fit, so we had to go back to square one. Then we had some minor issues with the bells, we weren't happy with them."

Anthony Davidson, the man behind the idea 25 years ago to complete the Cathedral's set of bells, said: "This is the day I have been waiting for all these years.

"The sound is absolutely marvellous. I am very impressed. This has become a very happy day for me."
