A dog was rescued by firefighters after it fell five metres (16ft) down a mine shaft in Cornwall.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service was called to Trewellard, near Penzance in West Cornwall, at about 14:40 GMT.

One of the 18 firefighters who attended was lowered into the shaft and rescued the cocker spaniel from the bottom of a dry pit.

A fire service spokeswoman said the dog was unharmed and has been reunited with his owner.
