A still has to be built over Chiverton Cross for the A30

Two major roads in Cornwall have reopened after three days of closures.

The A30 from Scorrier junction to Boxheater reopened at about 07:00 BST after it closed on Friday for major changes at Chiverton Cross roundabout.

The A390 between Chiverton Cross and Langarth Park has also reopened.

Drivers have complained of delays and signage problems; but project heads said people should get used to the layout, although they would look at possible temporary signs.

Diversions had been in place over the weekend as part of work to remove the roundabout, described as "Cornwall's worst accident hot-spot".

A flyover has still to be built.

The A30 had been due to reopen at 06:00 but the closure "overran its pre-agreed end time", National Highways said.

However, drivers did describe problems and at least one motorist was seen by BBC staff reversing because they found themselves in the wrong lane.

James Whatton said he was caught in "horrendous travel" while going from Bodmin to St Agnes.

He said: "It took me nearly three hours [on a] commute that has usually taken me about 40 minutes."

Dan Head said the new layout was confusing, causing him to drive further than he expected and having to come back on himself.

He said: "I think it is going to cause a bit of fun over the summer."

His son, Jim Head, travelling separately, said a lack of clear directions was "unhelpful", adding: "There are no signs, just road markings."

Neil Winter, from National Highways, said the work being finished on schedule was being classed as "a success".

But he acknowledged difficulties, saying queries would be raised about more signs.

He said: "We'll take it all on board, but people need to get used to it."

Highways heads said traffic would use the new layout at Chiverton, keeping access open to the A390, A3075 and B3277, while work continues to build a flyover.

The work is being carried out as part of a £330m scheme to convert the section of the A30 from Carland Cross to Chiverton Cross into a dual carriageway.
