Plans to turn a former school in Coventry into a museum are set to be backed by the city council.

The 12th Century Old Grammar School is currently on the English Heritage at risk register, but campaigners hope to use it to expand the transport museum.

It won a £4.6m lottery grant last year, as well as £3.1m of European funding.

Under plans going before Coventry City Council next week, the local authority will provide up to £2m to see the project get under way.

The local authority said the Heritage Lottery Fund and EU Regional Development Fund grants would only be provided if the scheme attracts other external funding.

It said the money would be used to help with the cash flow throughout the works, which are expected to be completed in 2015.

The Grade I listed Old Grammar School, which has been unused for 30 years, is expected to be turned into an exhibition, event and education centre.
