The police response to reports a student had gone missing, more than a year before he was found dead, is being investigated by the watchdog.

Coventry University student Ozeivo Akerele, 24, failed to return home from a night out in the city on 31 January 2015, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said.

His body was found by children on waste ground in Foleshill, on 21 April.

The watchdog said West Midlands Police had referred the matter to them.

Derrick Campbell, IPCC commissioner for the West Midlands, said: "We have extended our condolences to Mr Akerele's family at this sad time for them and we will keep them updated on our inquiries.

"We can assure them that we will carry out a thorough investigation into the circumstances to establish what happened and whether any lessons can be learned from this young man's tragic death."
