The former lift at the museum was difficult to maintain, the council said

A lift which has provided a "stalwart service" for more than 30 years is being replaced at a Warwickshire museum.

The work has begun at Nuneaton Museum & Art Gallery and is expected to take eight weeks, said the borough council.

During that time there will be only stair access to the first floor and activities such as Hands on History will be held downstairs.

The new lift has been paid for by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF).

Sue Markham, the council's portfolio holder for public services, said she was pleased money from the fund was being used to "improve our popular museum".

"While it will be more difficult in the short term as the works take place, these improvements will help the museum provide access for all for years to come," she said.

The old lift, which is being demolished, had become difficult to maintain because spare parts were hard to obtain.

The museum in Riversley Park offers free sessions, including storytelling for children aged under five.
