Some breast screening clinics resume in Cumbria

Some breast cancer clinics have resumed in Carlisle after eight patients previously given the all-clear were diagnosed with the disease.

All clinics were halted last week over concerns 1,600 women may not have been tested properly.

Three-yearly mammogram examinations for women aged 50 to 70 remain suspended pending a full investigation.

But women referred for symptomatic tests by GPs will be seen at special clinics over the next four Saturdays.

North Cumbria University Hospitals Trust said it hoped to resume all clinics as soon as possible and apologised for any distress caused.

Concerns over testing were raised when data showed that among women who were called for a second screening, cancer was detected in fewer cases than would be expected.

It later emerged that eight women who had been given the all clear by the service had since been diagnosed with breast cancer. A ninth woman was diagnosed with a non-invasive form of the disease.

The resumed clinics will see 70 women from north and west Cumbria each Saturday at the Cumberland Infirmary.
