University of Cumbria students re-sit exam after error

Seventy students at the University of Cumbria will re-sit an exam after they were given papers that already contained the answers.

University bosses said the problem was the result of "an administrative error".

The second-year students were all sitting an exam in anatomy and physiology. The section affected was 20% of the paper's mark.

The university said it planned to send a letter of apology to students.

Dr Sue Lee, the University's Associate Dean, described the incident as an "unfortunate mistake".

She said the students would re-sit the 20 minute section of the paper that was affected, on 7 February.

She added: "It is an extremely unfortunate error and it happens very rarely and normal procedure is that exam papers are looked at very, very carefully.

"We have instituted a slightly different checking mechanism for the future as a result of this."
