Funding threat to Lakes daily peak weather trek service

Weather assessors make the daily trip even on Christmas Day

A weather service which sends a climber up one of England's highest mountains in the Lake District every day including at Christmas is under threat.

For the past 35 years, Weatherline has sent an assessor up Helvellyn to provide winter fell-top ice and snow condition reports.

But now the Lake District National Park Authority said the service was under threat because of a lack of money.

It is looking for a volunteer to raise £25,000 a year to save the service.

The ideal candidate would be someone with marketing experience to try to attract sponsorship money to fund the 950m, daily treks.

The authority's volunteer co-ordinator Tim Duckmanton said: "We need someone who could commit to working one day a week, based at Brockhole, the national park visitor centre on the shores of Windermere.

"This is a very interesting, challenging and unique opportunity to get involved with.

"We are looking for someone with excellent communications skills, who is determined, resilient and well organised."
