Unions told of job losses at Sealy in Aspatria

Bed maker Sealy is cutting 40 jobs from its factory in Aspatria, Cumbria, union officials have been told.

The move follows financial problems for former parent company Silentnight, which was last month bought by US-based private equity firm HIG Capital.

Union bosses said they were "angry and disappointed" at the redundancies and were now fearful for the site's remaining 300 workers.

No-one from the company was available for comment.

Kevin Young GMB regional organiser said: "Private equity is no friend of workers, their families and communities and this has been clearly demonstrated at Sealy UK."

Mr Young said the GMB would be in talks with local management on Monday in an attempt to avoid further job losses.
