Railway station in west Cumbria gets £120,000 makeover

New shelters have been installed to protect travellers from the weather

A railway station in west Cumbria has undergone a £120,000 upgrade.

Solar panels and low energy lighting have been installed at Maryport station, on the Cumbrian coast, to make it more energy efficient.

Disabled access has also been improved in the station's car park, CCTV camera coverage extended and new shelters put in place to protect travellers from bad weather.

The project was funded by Northern Rail and Cumbria County Council.

Cumbria County councillor Tim Knowles said: "As a council we are constantly encouraging people to use public transport and improvements such as these in west Cumbria can make people's experience of public transport so much better."

Lee Wasnidge, Area Director for Northern Rail, said: "The recent improvements to Maryport will bring real benefits to customers travelling through the station."
