Taxi marshal scheme to keep Whitehaven drinkers safe

A new police scheme to keep drinkers safe on Boxing Day is to begin in Cumbria.

Door security staff will work as marshals to patrol the taxi rank on Duke Street, to help people get home safely and deal with any problems.

Cumbria Police in partnership with Business Against Crime (BAC) Whitehaven have set up the scheme in Whitehaven town centre to work until 03:30 GMT.

The scheme has been introduced after complaints of disorder in the area.

Police hope the scheme will continue into the New Year with marshals being in place on Friday and Saturday nights.
