Cockermouth Flood Action Group helps pay for defences

About 900 properties in the town were badly hit by flooding in 2009.

Families and businesses in Cumbria have raised £215,000 towards the cost of new flood defences for their town.

The Cockermouth Flood Action Group collected donations to help fund a £4.4m project expected to start this summer.

Sue Cashmore from the group said she was "proud" of the local community. Council tax payers also voted to pay higher bills to support the work.
