Tommy Mattinson said he sticks with the same faces

A Cumbrian man has retained his title as World Gurning Champion, claiming the title for the 15th time.

Tommy Mattinson said he usually "sticks with the same face" for the event, in which hopefuls put their head through a horse collar and "gurn".

The event is part of Egremont Crab Fair, which also features traditional sports, such as horse and pony leaping and pipe smoking competitions.

Hundreds attended the fair, and an open-air concert by Gareth Gates.

'Wolf man'

Mr Mattinson, from Aspatria, also holds the Guinness World Record for gurning, and has beaten his father's ten-time record as world champion.

In 2008, he gurned in front of the Queen during a visit to Cumbria.

He described his expression as "a cross between an alien and a wolf man".

"That said, this year in particular I really, really tried hard," he said.

"I put in a lot of effort, and now have a sore head and all the muscles in my neck ache."
