Storms have caused a trail of damage across Cumbria.

Winds of up to 80mph were recorded at St Bees and Walney, and the Great Dun Fell weather station reported gusts of 112mph.

The south of the county was the worst hit, with more than 1,000 homes remaining without power - overnight 5,000 were affected.

Sea defences at Parton near Whitehaven were damaged, causing problems on the coastal rail line.

Blown around

Roads have been blocked by fallen trees, and in Barrow flying debris and damage to buildings has led to the closure of Cornwallis Street.

One resident wrote on Twitter that garden furniture was being blown around as if it was in a washing machine.

The homes without power are mainly around the Milnthorpe, Kendal and Grange-over-Sands area.

A spokesman for Electricity North West said: "We are absolutely working as fast as we can, bringing crews in to do repairs.

"We expect all restoration to be complete today."
