Pupils who took exams at a Cumbria primary school have had their results annulled, after it was found papers were changed after tests had finished.

National curriculum tests, known as Sats, taken at Cartmel Church of England Primary School were examined by the Standards and Testing Agency (STA).

Some maths and spelling tests from the 2013-14 academic year were altered, the school said.

The school has hired external company Capita to carry out an investigation.

'Isolated occurrence'

A spokesman for the Diocese of Carlisle, which runs the school, said it was not known when the inquiry would be concluded.

He was unable to say exactly how many pupils were affected, but did confirm they were all now at secondary school and their parents had been informed.

Chair of governors Mary Iveson said: "We are very clear that the situation is totally unacceptable and we are very sorry that it has happened. It is an isolated occurrence."

Mike Mill, the director of education at the diocese, said "integrity and truth" were central values to the school's "Christian ethos".
