A man has died after armed police were called to an area of isolated woodland in Cumbria.
An area close to Hardendale Quarry, near Shap, was sealed off after a 63-year-old man was seen with a shotgun in the early hours.
Cumbria Police said the man, who has not been named but was from Penrith, later died from shotgun wounds.
A force spokesman said no-one else was involved and the man's family were being supported by specialist officers.
The force said it had referred the incident to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
