Police confirmed a body was found in the lake on Wednesday afternoon

A body has been found in the search for a swimmer who went missing in the Lake District.

The man in his 30s, from Newcastle, had got into difficulty at Brothers Water, a lake in the Hartsop Valley, shortly before 19:00 BST on Tuesday.

Emergency services have been conducting the search and a body was recovered at 14:30 BST but has not yet been formally identified, Cumbria Police said.

The death follows two other incidents in the county in recent days.

It is understood the man had been with friends when they went in the water.

The group has been praised for their response by the emergency services after raising the alarm.

Jamie Coward, from Cumbria Fire and Rescue, said people who enter large bodies of water could experience cold water shock, which can have tragic consequences.

"Like a lot of people at this time of year we have beautiful weather, beautiful scenery, people are attracted to water.

"People who do get into difficulty are maybe those who are not experienced in water, they are not particularly good swimmers, so it's about knowing your capabilities in and around the water."

Meanwhile, a search for a man who went missing at Crummock Water on Friday afternoon is ongoing.

On Sunday, the body of 16-year-old Mohammad Abdul Hamid was recovered in Carlisle after he got into difficulties in the River Eden at Rickerby Park.
