Cumbria summer jobs: 'There is only so much gardening you can do'
- Published
A Lake District tourism business said last year's summer season was "saved" by the older generation filling temporary vacancies.
Windermere Lake Cruises needs to more than double its workforce to deal with high demand in the peak months.
There were worries in 2023 due to the after-effects of Covid, and fewer workers from abroad since Brexit.
HR manager Ian Wilkinson said he was "optimistic" for this year, with an event on Saturday offering 100 jobs.
It will be held between 10:00 and 16:00 GMT at Bowness Pier.
Cumbria Tourism said the jobs are open to people of all ages.
'Engaging with public'
Alex Hicks, 70, became a seasonal worker in his 60s after he retired from a career in business and lecturing. He now works coach park assistant.
"Retirement is nice but there is only so much gardening you can do," said Mr Hicks, who lives in Windermere.
"I was looking for a job where I got to engage with the public and wasn't sat behind a computer all day long, and this role is perfect."
Cumbria Tourism said jobs in the Lake District "are perfect" for those looking for a late career change.
"A hundred jobs are up for grabs in one of the most beautiful locations in Britain, and if you think you've missed the boat because you've retired, think again," a spokesperson said.
Windermere Lake Cruises said it was searching for people to work on its cruise vessels, external, self-drive boats, cafes, shops and ticket offices throughout the peak holiday season and beyond.
Mr Wilkinson said: "We find the flexible nature of our job opportunities can be a perfect fit for those who have just taken retirement or at the other end of the scale students who are looking for work through the summer.
"There are no unsociable hours, no split shifts and you can work one day a week or five days a week, it's up to you."
