Carlisle: Four boys bailed over alleged hate crime on black pupil

Police are urging the public not to circulate video on social media

Four teenagers arrested over an alleged hate crime on a black schoolboy have been released on bail.

A video circulating online appears to show the student being pushed and punched by a white boy, before being made to kiss his shoes.

The teenagers were arrested after the alleged attack happened in the Upperby area of Carlisle on Friday.

Cumbria Constabulary said "abhorrent" images were circulating online and urged people not to share any video.

Supt Gill Cherry said the investigation was "fast paced" and added the force was taking the incident "extremely seriously".

She said patrols had been stepped up in response to concerns from the community and officers were talking to community leaders and groups, including education providers.

One boy was arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated actual bodily harm in the early hours of Saturday.

The three others were later arrested on suspicion of abetting racially aggravated actual bodily harm.

They were all bailed with conditions and investigations are continuing, the force added.
