Call to cut speed limits to 30mph in Derby

A political party is calling for speed limits to be reduced on roads in Derby city centre.

The Liberal Democrat group on Derby City Council want the authority to look at cutting the speed limits of all roads to 30mph within the city area.

Some residents have said cutting limits may cause increased congestion.

The city council said it was undertaking a review of speed management on all its roads to ensure they are "appropriate".

'Reduce casualties'

Councillor Hilary Jones, leader of the city council's Liberal Democrat group, said Pastures Hill and Uttoxeter Road should be reduced from 40 to a 30mph limit.

She said: "There's lots of traffic there [Pastures Hill] at peak times and it is an accident waiting to happen.

"There would have to be some exceptions like the A38 as it would be ridiculous to reduce that to 30mph.

"Wouldn't it be easier to have something a bit more uniform within the city boundaries and hopefully reduce casualties on the roads?"

The council is reducing the limit on Mansfield Road from 40 to 30 mph as part of a trial.

A city council spokesperson said: "The results of the trial will not only inform any long-term decision about the speed limit on Mansfield Road but will also help determine what actions we might take on other similar routes within the city."

In July, the Conservative-run council scrapped three of the city's speed cameras and put the other 17 under review.
