Voluntary redundancy scheme starts at Derby council

Derby City Council has started a voluntary redundancy programme as it seeks to shed 750 posts.

The authority has plans to save £32m by 2012, ahead of major cuts in funding from central government.

It will be holding a series of briefings so staff can examine the options available, with the application process completed by November.

Officials said the level of any compulsory redundancies would depend on the success of the current programme.

Adam Wilkinson, Chief Executive Officer, said: "On October 20th the government is set to announce significant cuts to the grants and funding it gives to all councils, including our own.

"In addition to this, we know our own efficiency programme 'One Derby One Council' will result in post reductions. These reductions will impact on what we do and how we do them."
