More than 60 Derbyshire schools are closed due to snow and ice.
Some roads are also shut, including the A57 Snake pass, A6024 up to Holme Moss, A537 Cat and Fiddle, Woodhead Pass and Steep Turnpike, Matlock.
The county council said conditions were very difficult across Derbyshire with high winds blowing snow on to roads.
Motorists have been advised to make only essential journeys in the affected areas. Further snow is expected in the Peak District on Wednesday.
A county council spokeswoman said its fleet of gritters were out several times during the night.
