Derbyshire police holds live web debate on police cuts

Derbyshire residents will have a chance to discuss the impact of police cutbacks in a live online debate.

The webcast on 20 January will allow people to participate in a public meeting in Chesterfield organised by the police as part of a consultation on proposed cuts.

The force is planning to cut £13m from its budget over the next two years.

The head of the Derbyshire Police Authority and Chief Constable Mick Creedon will both attend the event.

Plans to introduce police and crime commissioners across England will also be discussed during the meeting.

The force's government grant will be cut by almost 5% in 2011 and a further 6.4% in 2012.

The consultation is one of four meetings taking place across the county.

Phillip Hickson, from Derbyshire Police Authority, said: "We are facing an exceptionally challenging financial future but our overriding aim remains the same; to protect frontline policing and maintain the safety and quality of life of all our communities."

Mr Creedon said: "For the first time, people can submit comments online during the event and this new technology will mean that more people than ever before can have their say."

The force has already held live web "surgeries" for residents in Long Eaton.
