Victory Road waste incinerator granted permission

A proposed waste incineration plant in Derby has been granted permission by the Environment Agency.

The incinerator, in Victory Road, Sinfin, will burn a maximum of 30,000 tonnes of surplus wood, bark and wooden packaging each year.

Operator Clarke Power Services was granted planning permission for the plant by Derby City Council in 2008.

The Environment Agency said the plant could be built and operated without "significant risk" to public health.

Environment Agency spokesman Mark Haslam said: "We have carried out a thorough assessment of this application and taken into account all of the comments received during consultation.

'Air quality'

"In granting this permit we are satisfied that the plant can be built and operated in a way that will not cause a significant risk to the environment or public health.

"We will make sure that any plant that's built will meet high environmental standards and will be operated safely."

Simon Bacon, from protest group Sinfin And Spondon Against Incineration, said: "We don't believe that incineration should take place, there's so many issues involved in the subject from air quality issues and nano particles.

"They haven't proven that these things are entirely safe."
